Meet Danielle Hornyak

Hi Danielle!

Hello! My name is Danielle and I'm the maker behind Danielle Hornyak jewelry.

What does being a creative mean to you?

Being a creative person to me means you dream of new ideas and make those things a reality with your hands. I also think being creative is a calling. Some people enjoy making and others don't. Making isn't always easy but if it's part of who you are doing so brings about a great satisfaction.

Do you recall when you first realized you HAD to be creative?

I think like most creative people I've loved being artistic since I was a small child. I think I realized that I HAD to be creative in order to be happy around 8th or 9th grade. Making things with my hands was therapeutic and always made me happy.

What is your favorite work ritual?

I'd have to say great music and something to sip on like coffee or a LaCroix. If I'm starting a new project I usually tidy up my workspace before beginning so I have a nice clean space to start.

How do you cope when you feel overwhelmed?

It's so easy for me to get overwhelmed juggling daily errands, my 6 month old daughter and studio time. I'm a huge list maker, it helps me sort out everything I need to accomplish and prioritize what needs done first. I use the notepad on my iPhone to make my to do lists.

What three traits would you say are a must for someone going into business for themselves?

Great question! I think you need to be self motivated! No one can put in the work but you! I think you need to be organized in all aspects, with your time, your art, finances etc. Lastly be resourceful! It's not always easy but where there's a will there's a way couldn't be more true in my opinion!  Do what you need to do to get it done! Ask questions, seek out other creatives and never be afraid to ask for what you want.

What is your definition of success? Do you feel that you are successful?

For me having a goal in mind and completing it is my definition of success. I feel successful since I'm making new work whenever I can manage the time and juggling my new role as a mother along with household duties. I put all my spare time and energy into creative work and that makes me feel successful and most importantly happier all around.

What has been the best advice you have received?

Two pieces of advice have been the best for me. Things won't always be ideal, find a way and do your best with what you have. And don't stop making. When you're not in the mood that's the best time to start to get yourself out of that head space and feel inspired again.

Who is a female (past, present or fictional) you find inspirational?

Frida Kahlo. She overcame so much in her lifetime and was always true to herself and her art.
