Meet Kate Holian
Say hi! Would you like to introduce yourself?
Hi everyone, I’m Katie of knot + stitch shop. I create sassy embroideries that might make your grandma cringe or laugh…hopefully it’s the latter. My number one priority is finding ways to make beautiful and sustainable items for your home, that you can love for a long, long time!
After living in New York City and working in the fashion industry for about four years I was burnt out and losing my way. Last Summer I decided to move home and my mom gave me the front room of her new home in my hometown, Marblehead Massachusetts. Now it is the place that I spend most of my time, if I’m not working as a barista at a local artisan bakery!
What does being a creative mean to you?
Pushing the boundaries in any form, may it be in design, ways to save the planet, or simply creating a baller chicken salad sandwich with avocado, bacon, and basil mayo.
Do you recall when you first realized you HAD to be creative?
When I was four years old my mom started letting me dress myself, and living in New England I refused to wear anything without leggings underneath, even pants. So in my mind, that was just creativity!
What is your favorite work ritual?
Netflix or great music (anything from Van Morrison to Kendrick Lamar), lots of H20, and endless hours of embroidering in my studio. I’ve also recently begun doing abstract painting which in my mind is the complete opposite of my meticulous embroidery! This piece is still in process, but I’ve been loving the process.
How do you cope when you feel overwhelmed?
Hang with my puppy by the ocean. Then create a thorough and clear to-do list that breaks down what I have to do to use my time effectively and efficiently.
What three traits would you say are a must for someone going into business for themselves?
Resilience, Passion, and Patience!
What is your definition of success? Do you feel that you are successful?
To me success is loving what you do, feeling confident that you are helping the planet become a better place, and making people laugh along the way! And, YES, in that way I do feel successful!
What has been the best advice you have received?
Time is far more valuable than money.
Who is a female (past, present or fictional) you find inspirational?
My mom, she’s incredibly resilient, kind and is always trying to push the boundaries to make the world a better place.
