Meet Laura Rosado
Say hi! Would you like to introduce yourself?
Hi, my name is Laura and I am the maker behind Natura Macrame.
I design and create macramé wall hangings along with different accessories and home decorations pieces.
What does being a creative mean to you?
Being a creative to me means finding a way to express how we feel or see what surround us.
I believe we are all creatives, we just need to find our way and the time to develop our creativity!
Do you recall when you first realized you HAD to be creative?
I’ve always been very creative, but the first memory I have is from second grade. We had a contest in my school, we had to draw something and use the top of the laughing cow paper (the triangle shaped one) to fill up the drawing.
I did a little girl with an umbrella and I used the cones to fill up her dress and the umbrella. I ended up winning 1st place!
What is your favorite work ritual?
I don’t have a work ritual, it all depends on how my kids and my body wake up that day. I always try to find a balance between my work and my family but I don’t always get it.
And also, fibromyalgia play a big role on how my day goes, it all depends on how my body feels and where the pain is at that moment.
How do you cope when you feel overwhelmed?
I usually just stop working for a few hours. I try to do something completely different, get a snack, watch an episode from my favorite show and then get back to it.
And when I can’t stop because is an order that needs to be shipped next day, well, I just lose my mind! I am sure it happens to the best of us!
When you are running a business solo it is easy to be overwhelmed, you need to keep track of everything, emails, social media, material inventory and orders. To me it is very important to have a good agenda to help me keep up with all that and more! And even with all that, I’ve found myself running short on materials and forgetting to reply emails sometimes.
What three traits would you say are a must for someone going into business for themselves?
Don’t wait to have it all figured out. Every day you will find different challenges even after years of experience. It is a learning process and I don’t think there is a formula that you can master to be able to run the perfect business. Unfortunately you will make bad decisions sometimes and that is part of running your business, it is part of the learning process.
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. It can be a scary feeling but usually the results are the best. When I get an email from a client who ask me for something I never did before I usually accept the challenge and 99.9% of the time I didn’t regret it.
Don’t give up. It won’t be easy and you will doubt yourself sometimes but it is part of the process! Nothing in life comes easy, we have to work hard to get where we want to be. You will find yourself thinking if it is worth the struggle, the headaches and the sleepless night thinking about how you are going to take your business to the next level but with every little goal you achieve you get the wonderful feeling of knowing that you are going towards the right direction and that is what makes you push further and further everyday.
What is your definition of success? Do you feel that you are successful?
Being successful to me means being able to live the life you want, follow your dreams and be happy with yourself.
Am I successful? I am still working on it. I have a beautiful family, my health is not the best but I make the best out of it and I am working every day to get to the point where I want to be when it comes to my business and myself.
What has been the best advice you have received?
Learn how to relativize, give the things the importance they have, neither more nor less and you will save yourself a lot of headaches!
I not only apply this to my business but also to my personal life, I used to care too much about things that where beyond my control and that led me to periods of my life where I only saw the negative part of things, but as you grow older you learn how to let go on things that are not worth your time!
Who is a female (past, present or fictional) you find inspirational?
Definitely my mother. I’ve never met a braver, more generous and caring person than her. Always willing to help with a smile on her face and always putting the need of others before her own.
She is a dress maker, I grew up watching her sewing her days away, creating beautiful dresses and I think that helped me to be as creative as I am nowadays.
