Meet Brittani Buettner

Meet Brittani Buettner

Say hi! Would you like to introduce yourself?

Oh hi there! My name is Brittani Buettner and I am the metalsmith/designer behind the jewelry brand Scenic Route Collection. I currently live in the mountain town of Whistler, BC where I create pieces that showcase and emphasize the beauty of the natural world around us.

What does being a creative mean to you?

I feel as if creativity is a part of who I am. I don’t necessarily set out to be creative, it is just part of my every day; how I style my hair, experiment with recipes, or what I make in the studio. It even affects my time spent outdoors. I’m constantly searching for interesting textures, colors or light which lead to inspiration and new designs.

Do you recall when you first realized you HAD to be creative?

Being creative and working with my hands has been a part of my life since I was young, but it wasn’t until 2013 when I arrived home from studying abroad in Germany, I realized I wanted to make a business out of my passion for handmade. There have been many setbacks since I made my decision but I never regret it, because I know I’m living out my purpose.

What is your favorite work ritual?

It is important for me to wake up early and make the most of the day. Sometimes as early as 5:30 I get up, stretch, make tea and eat breakfast. I have some “me” time, either reading, sketching or watching tv and then I set out to accomplish some computer/office tasks. From there I pack up and head out to the studio, which is a short 5-7 drive away, to work on orders. There is always music playing, and if I’m alone, I sing my heart out. I usually head home around 4 because I like to keep a “regular” schedule so I can enjoy the evenings with my husband.

How do you cope when you feel overwhelmed?

Honestly, I’m not the best person to give advice on this, but what I have learned to be the best technique is to step away from the task at hand and take a moment to center myself. Luckily it is easy for me to get a change of scenery. I can go to the studio if my office to-list is daunting or come home if processes aren’t working at the studio. I take advantage of where I live, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery, it makes it easy to go for a walk and take a breather. I also turn to my husband at times of overwhelm, because he brings in a fresh perspective.

What three traits would you say are a must for someone going into business for themselves?

Stubborn- You know what’s best for you and your business, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Self- Confidence- You have to believe in the work you create in order to get it in the hands of the people who really see its value and worth.

Motivated- This work, being one woman show, is hard! You’ve got to have spark your own drive but that should be easy because you have awesome goals!

What is your definition of success? Do you feel that you are successful?

To me success is not about monetary gain. It is about accomplishing goals and gaining raving fans while staying true to your core values. Bases on that definition, I believe I’m on my way to success. I have come so far in such a short while and I am proud of it! Of course, moments of self-doubt creep in, but I just remind myself of these affirmations to get me through tough times.

What has been the best advice you have received?

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” –Theodore Roosevelt

Although not direct advice, it is a very good reminder. This journey is my very own, and I have to follow my own pace.

Who is a female (past, present or fictional) you find inspirational?

My grade eleven social studies teacher taught me the importance of learning from the past in order to not repeat our mistakes. This isn’t business related but very relevant to present global issues. That being said, she does inspire me to be passionate about what I believe in! I have no doubts that some of my fire comes from her.
