Meet Nathalie Denise Coulombe

Meet Nathalie Denise Coulombe

Say hi! Would you like to introduce yourself?

Hi! I would love to! My name is Nathalie Denise, I am a Canadian Artist currently residing in the sunny Okanagan Valley in beautiful British Columbia. I paint and draw mostly landscapes these days, abstract, semi abstract and somewhat representational – depending on the day, the project or the client. I use acrylic on canvas and watercolour, charcoal and pastels on paper.

What does being a creative mean to you?

I think being creative is about CREATING. And the feeling of being compelled to do so. There is something so satisfying and for me, fulfilling about making something out of nothing.

Do you recall when you first realized you HAD to be creative?

I couldn’t stop drawing the Free Willy VHS cover for years as a child. Haha. You know the one where the killer whale is jumping over Jesse and the barrier of rocks? I was a really cool kid obviously. There weren’t too many kids my age in my neighborhood so I spent a lot of time alone and outside with the trees and the plants and the bugs and the critters. My parents had an advertising agency with a massive art studio with more colored markers and pencils any kid would ever need. All the ingredients for a little artist in the making.

What is your favorite work ritual?

I love doing my daily writings.

Manifestations – I write out what I want to accomplish and achieve and where I want to be as if it has already happened or as if it’s in the process of happening. Just putting it out into the Universe.

Gratitude’s – I write out everything that I am grateful for.

Mantras – I write out confidence, positivity and money mantras.

A lot of it gets repeated quite a bit but that’s okay and really that’s kind of the point. Just to keep saying it until you believe it.

How do you cope when you feel overwhelmed?

If I’m honest I don’t cope with being over whelmed all that well BUT I am definitely getting better at it. Meditation is one thing that really helps slow me down and put me back in the moment. Usually when I am getting overwhelmed I am thinking of everything BUT the present, meditation helps me find some peace. I use the Headspace app, it is awesome. I also like to step away from what I am doing maybe get some exercise, play with my dog, go outside or do some cooking. I also subscribe to plant therapy – when I am feeling down getting a new plant usually brightens my day : D

What three traits would you say are a must for someone going into business for themselves?

Discipline – You have got to know that if you don’t do the work no one is going to do it for you (unless you have employees : D ). You’ve got to put in those hours to get those gains and it isn’t always going to be easy, in fact, generally it won’t be easy at all, but it will surely be worth it.

Perseverance – It took me close to 7 years to get to a place with my business where I could be a full-time visual artist. I was always working 2-3 jobs to make ends meet. There were times I thought about giving up on being a painter but something always pulled me back.  Sometimes things don’t go the way you want them to go. In some cases it takes a while to get to where you want to be. You’ve just got to persevere and have faith and work your damn butt off.

Courage – Going off on your own can be scary and you need to be brave. You must rise to the occasion. There is risk involved. There will be sharp learning curves and dead ends and closed doors. BUT I can assure you there will be numerous reasons to jump for joy.

What is your definition of success? Do you feel that you are successful?

I feel that a huge part of being successful in life is figuring out what you are here to do and doing it. There are people that go their whole lives searching for what their calling is. I don’t have to do that. I know who I am and I know who I want to be and I get to run with that everyday. I do feel that I am successful and also incredibly fortunate.

What has been the best advice you have received?

Didn’t receive it, I read it, but it’s in my head a lot these past few years.

“Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing--and keeping the unknown always beyond you.” Georgia O’keeffe.

Who is a female (past, present or fictional) you find inspirational?

Georgia O’keeffe all day, everyday.
