Repaying a Debt to Our Mother

Repaying a Debt to Our Mother

Say hello! Care to introduce yourself?

Hello, folks! My name is Kira Gulley and I am an artist that focuses on painting plant life I discover on my outdoors adventures. I strive to create something that will not only bring nature into your home but also inspire you to get outdoors! Nature has had such a huge impact on my path in life. My goal is to repay the favor and make a positive impact on the planet. I think about this in all of my business practices, from what I print to how I package...

I love sharing my passion for the outdoors with new people and showing them all the beauty that is in the world around us!

What does being a creative mean to you?

For me, creativity is something that exists in everyone, it's just a matter of unlocking it! I found the key to my creativity in the outdoors. The time I spend in nature feeds my creativity and allows me to express myself through art. I always encourage people to try a lot of different things and gather as many experiences as possible. I think this is essential in order to discover your true passions and ultimately unlocking your inner creative.

Do you recall when you first realized you HAD to be creative?

As a child, I always gravitated towards creative mediums. Whether that was doodling on all my homework papers, or thriving in art-based classes! As I got older I found myself working in many different creative industries that forced me to create other peoples' visions. Although, I thought of this as a happy compromise early on (do art and get paid) it was never really fulfilling.

Eventually, I decided I needed more and took that crazy jump to start creating for me again, just like I did as a kid. A few paint strokes later, I was fully immersed in my artistry and never looked back.

What is your favorite work ritual?

Step one, go outside! It is the beginning, middle, and end of my creative process. This might include weekend backpacking trips or light strolls to my neighborhood botanical gardens. I try to take daily breaks and head outside as often as I can to refresh and relax. It helps my creative process and always keeps me inspired!

How do you cope when you feel overwhelmed?

I am still a work-in-progress when it comes to coping with the unavoidable feeling of overwhelm you get when running your own business. I try to do multiple self-love practices. I'll do a little yoga or hit the rock climbing gym to release positive endorphins. At home, I'll often make a cup of hot tea and take a relaxing lavender-infused bath to help calm myself if I get a little overwhelmed. The stresses in life do take me down from time to time, but I find if I do a little deep breathing and a create some TLC moments I realize that I am strong and capable of handling anything that comes my way. And when you look back you see that life is so much better when you choose joy over stress!

What three traits would you say are a must for someone going into business for themselves?

Perseverance, dedication, and passion. Starting a business is no easy task. You are in a constant state of learning and growing, bending and flowing, and fumbling and falling. The only way you work through all of that is to persevere. If you are passionate about what you do you will continue to have the drive to carry on. Having a successful business doesn't happen overnight. It takes blood, sweat, and tears. If you remain hopeful and dedicate your time and your life to this journey you will come out on top.

What is your definition of success? Do you feel that you are successful?

Maya Angelou once said “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” To me success is a state of mind, knowing that you've done the best you can in your life and being happy with your outcome. If I take a hard look at myself I know that I wouldn't change a thing about this path that I am on. It is fulfilling me in ways I would have never expected. I am meeting goals, learning new things, and growing as a woman. I try to live a life of purpose and meaning. What else could I possibly want?!

What has been the best advice you have received?

Someone once told me that there is no point in chasing someone else’s dream. So I decided to chase my own. Choosing to only focus on my goals and not the paths of others has helped me stay focused.

Who is a female (past, present or fictional) you find inspirational?

There are so many killer women out there who inspire me daily, but I don't want to get all weepy here so I will keep it light and say Leslie Knope! She is a hardworking tough women who goes out and gets what she wants. She doesn’t let anyone stop her from achieving dreams. Also her favorite food is waffles, and those who know me, know that I love a good waffle!
